A Note From The President I would like to take the opportunity to update all of our members (and nonmembers) on the activities of our County Medical Society. Our major goal is to provide a vibrant and active organization for everyone. I am extremely fortunate to have a great group of physicians who make up the Board of Directors, who work hard and help promote the activities of our Society. I am indeed grateful to their support, advice, and their willingness to attend several meetings, which I know is the last thing any of us want to do when meetings get boring. In addition, I want to thank our executive staff of Ted Kanellakes, Patrick Derse and Sue Ciarlette, who really keep this organization running smoothly and point us in the right direction. More Attention Patients: Help Us Help You! Three years ago, the neurosurgeons in Will and Gundy Counties stopped peforming intra-cranial surgery and the obstetricians stopped delivering high risk pregnancies as a result of lawsuit abuse. Patients with head trauma had to be transferred as far as two hours away for trauma care and pregnant women had to drive more than an hour for specialty care. Through your support, medical liability reform legislation was passed and high risk specialists began practicing in our counties again. However, the battle is far from over- the trial lawyers are once again trying to overturn the recently passed legislation. Medical liability reform is one of the many legislative issues where we need your support. Help us help you by signing up to be part of our grassroots advocacy team. From time to time we may contact you and ask that you contact your elected official on legislation that can impact your access to quality healthcare. Sign up today! |
